aseismischer

Aseismischer is an adjective used in German to describe objects, designs, or zones that are resistant to earthquakes or designed to minimize seismic effects. In architecture, engineering and geophysics the term appears in phrases such as aseismische Bauweise, aseismische Systeme or aseismische Regionen, referring to methods and areas characterized by reduced or mitigated seismic impact.

Technical approaches include base isolation or flexible connections, dampers and energy-dissipation devices, and designing for redundancy and symmetry to limit torsion. The goal is to reduce forces, limit deformations, and preserve life safety and post-event operability. In practice, aseismic design is tailored to local seismic hazard, building type, occupancy, and performance objectives.

In geology and seismology, aseismic can describe a region, fault, or period with little or no detectable seismic activity. The term can also denote properties that suppress or fail to transmit seismic signals, depending on the context.

Etymology: the word derives from a- (without) and seismos (earthquake), with the German suffix -isch. It is used in German technical literature to denote concepts parallel to the English term aseismic, differentiating designs or regions that mitigate seismic risk from those that are actively seismically reactive.
