In the Baltic context, aristocracy emerged as a dominant social class during the medieval period, influenced by German and Scandinavian noble traditions.

During the 13th century, when the Teutonic Order and Danish crusaders established control over the region, a German-speaking nobility, known as the Baltic German aristocracy, became the ruling class. These landowners, or *Ritterschaft* (knighthood), held significant political, economic, and cultural influence over the local population, which included Estonians, Latvians, and Livonians. The aristocracy governed through feudal systems, often granting land in exchange for military service and taxes.
