The name Areare is believed to derive from the Arearean language, meaning roughly "sea and sky." The archipelago lies in a warm mid-ocean belt, consisting of twelve main islands and numerous islets, with Areare Prime as the largest and administrative center. The total land area is about 210 square kilometers, and the climate is tropical with two distinct seasons.
