Arealtetthet is a statistical concept used in geography, demography, and related fields to describe how concentrated a quantity is within a geographic area. It is the ratio of the amount of a quantity Q to the area A over which it is distributed, expressed as Q divided by A. In Nordic language usage, terms such as areal tetthet or arealdensitet are employed to refer to the same idea, akin to what English speakers call area density or population density. The resulting unit depends on the nature of Q and the chosen area unit (for example, people per square kilometer, trees per hectare, or incidents per square kilometer).

Applications of arealtetthet include urban planning, where population density informs infrastructure and service provision; ecology and forestry, where tree or species density guides management; and public health or marketing, where spatial concentration affects resource allocation or targeting. In practice, arealtetthet can be represented as a simple average over a defined area or as a spatially varying density field using raster formats or kernel density estimation, which smooths point data to reveal concentration patterns.

Limitations and considerations include the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), since density estimates depend on the size and boundaries of the area used for aggregation. Additionally, real distributions are often heterogeneous, so density maps or more advanced spatial statistics are used to capture local variation beyond the average density.
