Apteeker is the Estonian term for a pharmacist, a health professional who dispenses medications, provides drug information, and ensures the safe use of medicines. In contemporary Estonia, apteekers work in community and hospital pharmacies, as well as in pharmaceutical companies. They hold a professional license from the Health Board and may supervise pharmacy technicians, prepare prescriptions, compound sterile preparations, check for drug interactions, and advise customers on dosage, storage, and side effects. The term denotes the licensed practitioner; a pharmacy assistant is not an apteeker.

Etymology: The word apteeker derives from the Estonian word “apteek” for pharmacy, which in turn comes from the German “Apotheke” or Latin “apotheca.” The modern usage developed with the introduction of Western medical education and practice in Estonia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

History: In the Baltic region, the title and role of apteeker has historical roots as a municipal or town pharmacist tasked with operating a city pharmacy and regulating the sale of medicines. The position was connected to medieval guilds and local administration. Over time, the role evolved into the contemporary professional occupation of pharmacist (apteeker) with formal education and licensing, distinct from general pharmacy staff or vendors.
