Apparaats is a term that can refer to different senses of apparatus depending on context. In everyday Dutch, the standard plural of het apparaat is apparaten; apparats, if encountered, is typically an older or nonstandard form and not widely used in modern Dutch. Outside Dutch, the word appears in some languages and contexts as a loanword meaning “apparatus” or “equipment.”

Physical devices: In science and engineering, an apparatus denotes the set of instruments and equipment used in a procedure or experiment. Examples include spectrometers, centrifuges, and thermostatic baths that together form laboratory apparatus. The term emphasizes tangible hardware assembled to perform a task.

Organizational sense: The word is also used to describe the organized machinery of an institution or state—the bureaucratic apparatus. In political theory, the term state apparatus or administrative apparatus refers to the system of ministries, agencies, and procedures through which power is exercised. The concept has been advanced in particular by Louis Althusser, who described the state as composed of repressive and ideological apparatuses that help reproduce social relations.

Usage and nuance: Apparatus can therefore refer to both concrete instruments and abstract structures. Context determines whether it denotes hardware, an organizational system, or a combination of both.
