Apoptosis is a highly regulated process of programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms. Both pathways converge on the activation of a family of proteases called caspases, which execute the dismantling of the cell.

The precise regulation of apoptosis is vital for maintaining health. Dysregulation of this process can contribute to a range of diseases. For instance, insufficient apoptosis can lead to cancer, as cells that should be eliminated continue to proliferate. Conversely, excessive apoptosis can result in neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disorders, and tissue damage. Understanding the intricate mechanisms of apoptosis is therefore a key area of research in biology and medicine.
