Aperiodicity refers to a lack of periodicity in a sequence or system. A periodic sequence is one where a pattern repeats itself at regular intervals. For example, the sequence 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1... is periodic with a period of 2. An aperiodic sequence, in contrast, does not exhibit such a repeating pattern.

In mathematics, aperiodic sequences can arise in various contexts. One well-known example is the Fibonacci word, generated by repeatedly applying a substitution rule to an initial string. While the Fibonacci word contains structure, it is aperiodic. Another area where aperiodicity is studied is in the theory of dynamical systems, where the orbits of points in a phase space may not repeat.

Aperiodicity is also a significant concept in the study of quasicrystals. These are solid materials that have aperiodic atomic arrangements, yet possess a high degree of order. Unlike regular crystals, whose atomic structures exhibit translational symmetry and can be described by repeating unit cells, quasicrystals have symmetries that do not allow for such simple periodicity. This ordered aperiodicity gives quasicrystals unique physical and electronic properties. The discovery of quasicrystals challenged the traditional understanding of crystalline solids and led to the development of new mathematical tools to describe their structures.
