Apeiro is a term that originates from the Greek word apeiros, meaning "endless" or "infinite." In mathematics, it is used to refer to a countably infinite sequence or progression. This concept is distinct from uncountable infinities, such as the set of all real numbers.

A key characteristic of an apeiro is that its elements can be put into a one-to-one correspondence with the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, and so on). This means that even though the sequence has no end, we can, in principle, count its members. Examples of apeiros include the sequence of all integers (..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...) or the sequence of all even numbers (2, 4, 6, ...).

The idea of apeiro is fundamental in set theory, particularly in the work of Georg Cantor, who explored different sizes of infinity. Apeiros are also relevant in areas like calculus, where limits often involve sequences that extend indefinitely, and in the study of formal languages and computability.
