Aorttaläppä, also known as the aortic valve, is one of the four valves in the heart. It is located between the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber, and the aorta, the body's largest artery. The primary function of the aortic valve is to control the flow of oxygenated blood from the left ventricle into the aorta.

The valve consists of three small, flexible flaps called leaflets or cusps. When the left ventricle contracts, these leaflets open, allowing blood to be pumped into the aorta. When the ventricle relaxes, the pressure in the aorta forces the leaflets to close, preventing blood from flowing back into the left ventricle. This ensures that the heart pumps blood efficiently to the rest of the body.

Problems with the aortic valve can lead to various medical conditions. Aortic stenosis occurs when the valve narrows and restricts blood flow. This can cause symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Aortic regurgitation, also known as aortic insufficiency, happens when the valve doesn't close properly, allowing blood to leak back into the left ventricle. This can lead to heart enlargement and heart failure over time. These conditions can be congenital, develop with age, or be caused by infections or other diseases. Diagnosis and treatment of aortic valve issues are crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health.
