Aortaliköregurgitasyon, also known as aortic regurgitation or aortic insufficiency, is a condition where the aortic valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak back into the left ventricle from the aorta. This occurs during diastole, the relaxation phase of the heart. The aortic valve is a one-way valve situated between the aorta, the main artery carrying oxygenated blood from the heart, and the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber. When the valve malfunctions, blood flows backward, increasing the workload on the left ventricle.

Common causes of aortaliköregurgitasyon include rheumatic fever, congenital bicuspid aortic valve, aortic root dilation, endocarditis, and certain connective tissue disorders. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and onset of the condition. Mild cases may be asymptomatic, while severe or chronic regurgitation can lead to shortness of breath, particularly with exertion, chest pain (angina), fatigue, palpitations, and swelling in the legs and feet.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination to listen for characteristic murmurs, echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) to assess valve function and blood flow, and sometimes other imaging tests like cardiac MRI or CT scans. Treatment options range from monitoring for mild cases to medications to manage symptoms and reduce blood pressure, and in more severe instances, surgical repair or replacement of the aortic valve. Early detection and management are crucial to prevent complications such as heart failure and arrhythmias.
