Anycastosoite is a term that combines "anycast," a network addressing and routing scheme, with "osoite," the Finnish word for address. Therefore, anycastosoite can be understood as an "anycast address" in a Finnish context. In network engineering, an anycast address is a destination IP address assigned to multiple network interfaces. When a client sends a packet to an anycast address, the packet is routed to the topologically nearest interface that is advertising that address. This is distinct from unicast, where packets are sent to a single, specific destination, and multicast, where packets are sent to multiple destinations simultaneously.

The primary benefit of anycast routing is improved performance and reliability. By directing traffic to the closest available server, latency is reduced, leading to faster response times for users. If one server becomes unavailable, traffic is automatically rerouted to the next nearest active server, ensuring continuous service. This makes anycast particularly useful for large-scale distributed systems such as Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), Domain Name System (DNS) root servers, and online gaming platforms. The implementation of anycast relies on Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing policies to announce the same IP prefix from multiple locations. When a client initiates a connection, their local router, using BGP information, determines the shortest path to one of the servers advertising the anycast address and forwards the packet accordingly.
