anukleaarse

Anukleaarse is an Estonian adjective meaning without a nucleus. In scientific usage it describes cells, organelles, or organisms that lack a nucleus, and it is often translated into English as anucleate.

In biology, the best-known example is the mature mammalian red blood cell, which loses its nucleus during development (erythropoiesis). Platelets are also anucleate, being cytoplasmic fragments without a nucleus. In contrast, most plant and animal cells retain their nuclei.

In research and medicine, anukleaarse is the direct Estonian term used in textbooks and papers to denote this feature; English-language texts favor anucleate or enucleated depending on context (for cells vs procedural removal of the nucleus). Enucleation is also a laboratory technique used in cloning and cell biology.
