An anticyclone, also known as a high-pressure system, is a large-scale weather phenomenon characterized by a high-pressure center and typically clear, sunny skies. It is the opposite of a cyclone, which is associated with low-pressure systems and often brings stormy weather. Anticyclones are common in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and can vary in size from small, local systems to large, synoptic-scale features that can span thousands of kilometers.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the winds around an anticyclone flow in a clockwise direction, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they flow counterclockwise. This is due to the Coriolis effect, which deflects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. The clear skies associated with anticyclones are caused by the sinking air in the center of the system, which inhibits cloud formation and precipitation.

Anticyclones can have a significant impact on weather patterns, often bringing prolonged periods of dry, stable weather. They can also contribute to the formation of fog and frost, especially during the night when the ground cools rapidly. In some cases, anticyclones can lead to extreme weather conditions, such as heatwaves or prolonged droughts.

Anticyclones are often associated with the subtropical high-pressure belts, which are located around 30 degrees north and south of the equator. These belts are characterized by persistent anticyclonic conditions and are a key feature of the global atmospheric circulation. Anticyclones can also form in association with other weather systems, such as cold fronts or upper-level troughs, and can play a role in the development of various weather phenomena, including blocking patterns and heat domes.
