antiCENPB

AntiCENPB refers to antibodies that specifically target the Centromere Protein B (CENPB). CENPB is a crucial component of the centromere, a specialized region of DNA on chromosomes that is essential for proper chromosome segregation during cell division (mitosis and meiosis). It plays a role in the assembly of the kinetochore, the protein complex that attaches to the spindle microtubules, enabling the movement of chromosomes.

The detection of antiCENPB antibodies in a patient's serum is often associated with autoimmune diseases, particularly the connective tissue disease known as the limited form of cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc), also known as CREST syndrome (Calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, Esophageal dysmotility, Sclerodactyly, and Telangiectasias). It is considered one of the major centromere autoantibodies, alongside antiCENPA and antiCENPC.

The presence of antiCENPB antibodies can be identified through various serological assays, such as indirect immunofluorescence microscopy using human or primate cell lines, or by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). While antiCENPB antibodies are a significant biomarker for lcSSc, their exact pathogenic role in the development of the disease is still under investigation. They are primarily used as a diagnostic marker and to help classify systemic sclerosis subtypes.
