antagoniti
Antagoniti is a term encountered in some Italian-language literary and media studies to describe the collection of antagonistic forces within a narrative. In standard Italian, the common noun for a single opponent is antagonista and the plural is antagonisti; antagoniti appears in a number of analyses as a variant plural used to emphasize multiplicity of opposition. The term is not universally used and its sense overlaps with the more common English “antagonists” or the Italian “antagonisti,” but it is sometimes employed to discuss multiple opposing agents as a coherent set.
Antagoniti can include a range of oppositional elements: individual villains, rival groups, impeding institutions, impersonal forces
In narrative practice, antagoniti serve to raise stakes, drive plot progression, and illuminate themes by testing
The dynamics among antagoniti and the protagonist can shape pacing, point of view, and audience interpretation.
