Ansiktsreflexer, also known as facial reflexes, are involuntary muscle contractions in the face that occur in response to specific stimuli. These reflexes are mediated by the nervous system and play important roles in protection, communication, and basic physiological functions.

One of the most well-known facial reflexes is the blink reflex, which is triggered by a sudden bright light or a touch to the cornea. This reflex causes the eyelids to close rapidly, protecting the eye from potential harm. Another common reflex is the gag reflex, which is initiated when the back of the throat is touched, causing a person to gag or retch to prevent choking.

Other facial reflexes include the corneal reflex, which is a specific type of blink reflex, and various reflexes associated with chewing and swallowing. The withdrawal reflex, when applied to the face, can also be considered a facial reflex, causing a rapid retraction of the head or face from a painful stimulus.

These reflexes are often tested by medical professionals to assess the integrity of the cranial nerves, particularly the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V) and the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII), which are crucial for facial sensation and movement. Abnormalities in facial reflexes can indicate neurological conditions affecting these nerves or the brainstem. While many facial reflexes are present from birth, some can develop or change with age.
