Anosmia is the partial or complete loss of the sense of smell. This condition can affect one or both nostrils. When it affects both nostrils, it is referred to as total anosmia. It can be a temporary or permanent condition.

The sense of smell is a complex process involving the olfactory nerves, which run from the nose to the brain. Damage or dysfunction anywhere along this pathway can lead to anosmia. Common causes include upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold or flu, which can cause inflammation and swelling that obstructs the olfactory passages. Nasal and sinus diseases, like chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps, can also impair smell.

Head injuries, particularly those affecting the front of the head, can damage the olfactory bulbs or nerves. Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis are also associated with anosmia, as is aging. Certain medications and treatments, like chemotherapy, can have anosmia as a side effect. Exposure to certain toxins or chemicals can also damage the olfactory system.

In some cases, the cause of anosmia is unknown, referred to as idiopathic anosmia. The impact of anosmia extends beyond the inability to detect odors; it can significantly affect a person's quality of life. It can diminish the enjoyment of food, as taste is closely linked to smell. It can also pose safety risks, such as the inability to detect gas leaks or smoke from fires. Anosmia can also lead to emotional and psychological distress, including depression and social isolation. Diagnosis typically involves a smell test and may require imaging studies to identify underlying causes. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include addressing nasal congestion, treating infections, or discontinuing offending medications. For some individuals, anosmia may be permanent.
