These anchors are engineered to resist forces that could dislodge the object they are attached to. The selection of an anchor type depends heavily on the specific application, the environment, and the expected loads.

In construction, anchors are used to fasten structural elements to concrete, masonry, or rock. Common types include expansion anchors, which expand as they are tightened to create a tight fit within a pre-drilled hole, and adhesive anchors, which use a chemical epoxy or resin to bond a threaded rod or rebar to the substrate. Wedge anchors are a type of expansion anchor that relies on a tightening mechanism to drive a wedge, expanding the anchor within the hole. Screw anchors, on the other hand, are designed to be screwed directly into pre-drilled holes in concrete or masonry.

In marine contexts, anchors are used to moor vessels. Fluke anchors, also known as Danforth anchors, are characterized by their two flat, broad flukes that dig into the seabed. Plow anchors, like the CQR anchor, have a single point that resembles a plowshare, designed to bury itself in sand or mud. Mushroom anchors are simple, heavy anchors with a mushroom shape that relies on their weight and suction to hold. The appropriate marine anchor type is crucial for maintaining a vessel's position and safety. The effectiveness of any anchor type is also influenced by the seabed composition and prevailing weather conditions.
