Anholdelser are formal acts by police or other authorities that deprive a person of their liberty for the purpose of investigation and possible prosecution. The term is used in Danish and Norwegian legal language and corresponds to what in English is commonly called arrests. Anholdelser initiate a process designed to secure evidence, prevent harm, or bring a suspect before a court.

Legal basis and grounds vary by jurisdiction but generally require some level of suspicion or probable cause that the person has committed or is about to commit a crime. In many systems, an arrest may be made with a warrant, while in urgent or exigent circumstances police may arrest without a warrant if there is a sufficient basis for action.

Procedure at arrest typically includes informing the person of the reasons for the arrest and their rights, such as the right to counsel and the right to remain silent. Detainees may be searched and transported to a police station for processing, which can include recording personal data and, in some jurisdictions, fingerprinting or photographing.
