Angiográfia is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the blood vessels of the body. It is a type of diagnostic test that involves injecting a contrast dye into the bloodstream, which then travels through the arteries and veins. This dye is radiopaque, meaning it absorbs X-rays, making the blood vessels visible on an X-ray image. The procedure is typically performed by a radiologist or interventional radiologist.

The primary purpose of angiográfia is to detect abnormalities in blood vessels, such as blockages (stenosis), aneurysms (weakened and bulging blood vessels), or malformations. It can also be used to guide minimally invasive procedures, like angioplasty and stenting, to open narrowed or blocked vessels. Different types of angiográfia exist, depending on the area of the body being examined, including cerebral angiográfia for the brain, coronary angiográfia for the heart, and peripheral angiográfia for the limbs.

Before the procedure, patients are usually asked about allergies, especially to iodine-based contrast agents, and any kidney problems. During the angiográfia, a small incision is made, typically in the groin or arm, to insert a catheter into an artery. The catheter is guided to the area of interest, and the contrast dye is injected. A series of X-ray images are then taken. Complications are rare but can include bleeding at the insertion site, allergic reactions to the contrast dye, or damage to the blood vessel. Angiográfia plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing a wide range of vascular diseases.
