Analog modulation is a technique used in telecommunications to transmit information by varying one or more properties of a continuous waveform, known as the carrier signal, in proportion to the information signal. This process embeds the information onto the carrier, allowing it to be sent over a transmission medium.

There are several common types of analog modulation. Amplitude modulation (AM) varies the amplitude of the carrier wave, while the frequency and phase remain constant. This method is often used in AM radio broadcasting. Frequency modulation (FM) changes the frequency of the carrier wave in accordance with the information signal, keeping the amplitude constant. FM radio broadcasting and some analog television audio signals utilize this technique. Phase modulation (PM) modifies the phase of the carrier wave based on the information signal. While distinct from FM, PM is closely related and can often be converted to FM.

The primary purpose of modulation is to shift the information signal to a higher frequency range, making it suitable for transmission over radio waves. This also allows multiple signals to be transmitted simultaneously over the same medium without interference, a concept known as frequency division multiplexing (FDM). Analog modulation is susceptible to noise and interference, which can degrade the quality of the transmitted information. Despite the rise of digital modulation techniques, analog modulation remains relevant in certain applications.
