Anabiosis is a state of suspended animation found in some organisms. It is characterized by a drastic reduction in metabolic activity, often to imperceptible levels, which allows the organism to survive extreme environmental conditions such as desiccation, freezing, or lack of oxygen. This state is not permanent and can be reversed when conditions become favorable again.

The process typically involves dehydration, where the organism expels most of its water content. This dehydration is often accompanied by biochemical changes that protect cellular structures from damage. For example, certain sugars may be produced to replace water and stabilize membranes. Upon rehydration or the return of favorable conditions, metabolic processes resume, and the organism returns to its active state.

Anabiosis is observed in a wide range of life forms, including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, algae, protozoa, tardigrades, nematodes, and certain plant seeds and spores. Tardigrades, also known as water bears, are particularly well-known for their ability to enter an anabiotic state, surviving extreme temperatures, radiation, and even the vacuum of space.

In medicine, it could potentially lead to new methods for preserving organs for transplantation or for protecting tissues during surgery.
