Amylase-lipase is a combination diagnostic test used in healthcare to assess pancreatic function. It measures the levels of two specific enzymes in the blood: amylase and lipase. Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down complex carbohydrates (starches) into simpler sugars. Lipase is an enzyme that breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Both enzymes are produced primarily by the pancreas, with smaller amounts of amylase also produced by the salivary glands.

Elevated levels of amylase and lipase in the blood can indicate damage to the pancreas, most commonly pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreatitis can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long-term). Other conditions that can cause abnormal amylase and lipase levels include gallstones, pancreatic cancer, duodenal ulcers, and certain medications.

The amylase-lipase test is a valuable tool for diagnosing and monitoring pancreatic diseases. While amylase levels may rise and fall more quickly, lipase levels tend to remain elevated for a longer period, making lipase a more specific and reliable indicator of pancreatic inflammation. The interpretation of these enzyme levels is always done in conjunction with a patient's medical history, physical examination, and other diagnostic tests.
