Amniótica refers to the amniotic fluid, a protective liquid that surrounds a fetus in the uterus. This fluid is contained within the amniotic sac, a membrane that also holds the fetus. Amniotic fluid plays a crucial role in fetal development. It cushions the fetus from external blows and impacts, preventing injury. It also allows the fetus to move freely, which is essential for muscle and bone development. The fluid helps maintain a constant temperature within the uterus, protecting the fetus from temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, the fetus swallows amniotic fluid, which aids in the development of the gastrointestinal system. It also allows the lungs to develop properly as the fetus "breathes" it in and out.

The volume of amniotic fluid changes throughout pregnancy. It increases significantly during the second trimester and reaches its peak around 34-36 weeks of gestation, after which it gradually decreases before labor. The composition of amniotic fluid also changes, initially being derived from maternal plasma and later from fetal urine and lung secretions. Monitoring amniotic fluid levels is an important aspect of prenatal care, as both too much (polyhydramnios) and too little (oligohydramnios) can indicate potential complications for the mother and baby. These conditions can be associated with issues like fetal growth restriction, maternal diabetes, or problems with the fetal urinary system. Amniotic fluid can be analyzed through amniocentesis to screen for chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections.
