Amniocentesis is a medical procedure where a small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn from the sac surrounding a fetus. This fluid contains fetal cells, which can then be tested for a variety of genetic and chromosomal abnormalities, as well as certain infections. The procedure is typically performed between the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy.

A needle is inserted through the pregnant person's abdomen into the amniotic sac, guided by ultrasound. A small amount of amniotic fluid is then collected. The collected fluid is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Common reasons for performing amniocentesis include advanced maternal age, a family history of genetic disorders, or previous children with genetic conditions. It can also be used to diagnose certain birth defects or to determine the maturity of the fetal lungs late in pregnancy.

While generally considered safe, amniocentesis carries a small risk of complications, such as miscarriage, infection, or leakage of amniotic fluid. These risks are carefully weighed against the benefits of obtaining diagnostic information. The results of the test can provide valuable information for pregnancy management and allow parents to make informed decisions.
