Ammoniumammoniak is not a standard chemical name for a single compound. In many contexts it appears as a colloquial or shorthand reference to the ammonium–ammonia system, meaning the two related nitrogen species ammonium (NH4+) and ammonia (NH3) that can coexist in aqueous solutions or in gas–liquid equilibria.

In water, ammonia and ammonium interconvert according to the reaction NH3 + H2O ⇌ NH4+ + OH−. The position of this equilibrium is governed by the acid dissociation constant, with a pKa of about 9.25 at 25°C. Below this pH, NH4+ predominates; above it, NH3 becomes more abundant. This relationship allows the NH3/NH4+ pair to act as a buffer for pH in the appropriate range, often used in laboratory and industrial settings.

NH3 is a weak base and a gaseous compound at room temperature, readily soluble in water to form ammonium hydroxide (often referred to as NH4OH, though this is a misnomer for the dissolved species). Ammonium (NH4+) forms when NH3 accepts a proton or when ammonia reacts with acids to yield ammonium salts such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4). Both forms are widely utilized: ammonia as a feedstock for fertilizers and chemicals, and ammonium salts in fertilizers, foods, and various syntheses.

Safety and handling differ: ammonia gas is caustic and has a sharp odor, requiring good ventilation and protective measures, while ammonium salts are typically less volatile but still require appropriate handling and disposal considerations. The NH3/NH4+ system remains a fundamental concept in acid–base chemistry, buffering, and nitrogen chemistry.
