Ammoniakkijäähdytys, also known as ammonia refrigeration, is a refrigeration cycle that uses ammonia (NH3) as a refrigerant. It is a well-established and widely used technology, particularly in large-scale industrial applications. The ammonia refrigeration cycle operates similarly to other vapor-compression refrigeration systems, involving the evaporation, compression, condensation, and expansion of the refrigerant.

In this process, liquid ammonia flows through an expansion valve where its pressure is reduced, causing it to evaporate and absorb heat from the surrounding environment, thus producing a cooling effect. The gaseous ammonia then enters a compressor, where its pressure and temperature are increased. The hot, high-pressure ammonia gas is then passed through a condenser, where it releases heat to a cooling medium (such as water or air) and condenses back into a liquid. This liquid ammonia is then recirculated to the expansion valve, completing the cycle.

Ammonia is an effective refrigerant due to its favorable thermodynamic properties, including a high latent heat of vaporization and good heat transfer characteristics. It is also a relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly refrigerant, as it does not contribute to ozone depletion or global warming. However, ammonia is toxic and flammable, requiring careful handling and safety measures in its implementation. Its distinct odor also serves as an early warning for leaks. Common applications for ammonia refrigeration include food processing and storage, breweries, ice rinks, and chemical plants.
