Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia, where one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Their chemical properties, particularly their basicity and ability to react with acidic compounds, make them valuable in various industrial and scientific applications.

One of the most prominent uses of amine systems is in the removal of acidic gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), from gas streams. This process, known as gas sweetening or acid gas removal, is crucial in industries like natural gas processing, oil refining, and power generation. The amine solution is subsequently heated in a regenerator, releasing the captured acid gases and regenerating the amine for reuse, creating a cyclical amine system.

Beyond gas treatment, amine systems can be found in other areas. For instance, certain amines are used as catalysts in chemical synthesis, facilitating or accelerating specific reactions. They can also act as corrosion inhibitors, forming protective layers on metal surfaces. In analytical chemistry, amines may be employed as reagents for detecting or quantifying certain substances.
