The infectious stage is the cyst, which is resistant to environmental conditions. Ingestion of cysts leads to the trophozoite form in the intestine, which can cause disease or encyst to be passed in feces. Diagnosis is usually made by microscopic examination of stool samples for cysts or trophozoites, or through serological tests.

Treatment for amebiasis depends on the severity of the infection and whether it is confined to the intestine or has spread to other organs. Metronidazole is a commonly prescribed medication for invasive amebiasis. Prevention strategies focus on improved sanitation, access to clean water, and proper food handling practices. Public health efforts aim to reduce transmission in areas where the parasite is endemic.
