ambuláns

Ambuláns refers to medical care and patients who do not stay overnight in a hospital. The term is used to describe ambulatory or outpatient care, delivered in clinics, doctor's offices, day-surgery centers, diagnostic facilities, or similar settings. An ambulant patient receives evaluation, treatment, or procedures but is discharged on the same day, in contrast to inpatient care where a patient is admitted for an overnight or longer stay.

Ambulatory care encompasses a wide range of services, including consultations, imaging and laboratory tests, preventive services, vaccinations, physical therapy, and minor surgical procedures that do not require extended observation. It also covers ongoing management of chronic conditions through regular but non-residential visits. In many health systems, ambulant services are organized through outpatient departments, private practices, or designated ambulatory centers and may be reimbursed under different insurance arrangements than inpatient care.

Etymology and usage: ambuláns and its variants appear in several languages (for example ambulantní/ambulantný in Slavic languages, ambulant in English), all tracing back to Latin ambulum, ambulan, meaning to walk. The concept is central to health-system planning, influencing resource allocation, scheduling, and cost control, since ambulant care generally requires fewer resources per encounter than inpatient care but serves a large share of routine and preventive health needs.
