amaverat

Amaverat is a Latin verb form. It is the pluperfect indicative active, third-person singular, derived from the verb amare, meaning to love. It translates as "he/she/it had loved" and marks an action that was completed before another past action.

Morphology and forms. The pluperfect active uses the perfect stem amav- with the endings -eram, -eras, -erat, -eramus, -eratis, -erant. Therefore the principal forms are amaveram, amaveras, amaverat, amaveramus, amaveratis, amaverant. Amaverat specifically is the third-person singular form.

Usage. Amaverat is used in narrative and reported speech to place a past event earlier than another past event. It commonly appears in subordinate clauses, often with conjunctions such as cum or antequam, to indicate anteriority in time. For example, "Pater amaverat filiam antequam discessit" translates as "The father had loved his daughter before he left." The pluperfect contrasts with amabat (imperfect) to distinguish ongoing past action from completed past action.
