Amatöörraadio, often referred to as ham radio, is a hobby and service that brings people, electronics, and communication together. It allows individuals to communicate with other amateur radio enthusiasts across town, country, or even around the world, all without the need for the internet or cell phones. Amateurs use radio frequencies allocated specifically for their use.

The practice involves operating radio transmitters and receivers for the purpose of non-commercial exchange of information,or for experimentation, for self-training, or for personal enjoyment. It is distinct from commercial broadcasting and public mobile radio services. To operate an amateur radio station, individuals must obtain a license from the relevant government authority, which typically involves passing an examination demonstrating knowledge of radio theory, regulations, and operating procedures.

Amateur radio operators, or "hams," can communicate using various modes, including voice (single sideband, frequency modulation), Morse code (CW), and digital modes that transmit data over the airwaves. Many hams also engage in "QRP" operation, which involves using low-power transmitters, adding an extra challenge to making long-distance contacts. The hobby encourages technical skill development, fostering an understanding of electronics, radio propagation, and communication systems. During emergencies, amateur radio operators often provide critical communication support when normal infrastructure is disrupted, a service known as amateur radio emergency communication.
