Alveolaarit, or alveolar consonants, are sounds produced with the tongue tip or blade against or near the alveolar ridge, the gum ridge just behind the upper front teeth. This place of articulation is one of the most common across the world’s languages and forms a central part of many consonant inventories.

The main types of alveolar sounds include stops such as [t] and [d]; nasals such as [n]; fricatives such as [s] and [z]; liquids such as [l] and the alveolar approximant [ɹ]; and the alveolar trill [r]. Alveolar taps or flaps, like [ɾ], occur in some languages (for example the American English pronunciation of “water” in certain dialects). Some languages also feature alveolar affricates, such as [t͡s] and [d͡z]. In addition, there are alveolar lateral fricatives like [ɬ] found in a few languages.

Alveolaarit eroavat dentaalisista ja post-alveolaarisista artikulaatioista. Dentaaliset äänet tuotetaan hampaiden kosketuksella, kun taas post-alveolaarit asetellaan hieman taaempaan alveolaarireikiin, usein behind the alveolar ridge. Alveolaarien kehitys ja tarjonta vaihtelevat kielestä toiseen, ja niillä on usein sekä fortiaal- että allofonisia vaihteluita.

IPA:n merkinnöissä alveolaariset merkitään esimerkiksi symboleilla [t], [d], [n], [s], [z], [l], [ɹ], [ɾ], [r], sekä [ɬ] joissakin kielissä.
