Alusläbipaistvus, meaning "substrate translucency" in Estonian, refers to the property of a material, particularly in the context of electronic displays, that allows light to pass through it. This characteristic is crucial for the fabrication of certain types of displays, where the active layers responsible for emitting or modulating light are placed on a transparent substrate. The substrate itself is typically made of glass or flexible plastic materials.

In active-matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs), for instance, the liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between two glass substrates. Light from a backlight unit passes through the rear substrate, the liquid crystal layer, and then the front substrate to reach the viewer. The transparency of the substrate is essential for efficient light transmission and for the proper functioning of the display's optical components.

Similarly, in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, alusläbipaistvus is a key factor. OLEDs can be manufactured in two main configurations: bottom-emission and top-emission. In bottom-emission devices, the light is emitted upwards through the transparent substrate. In top-emission devices, the light is emitted upwards towards the viewer, and the substrate is also transparent to allow this light to pass.

The development of highly transparent and durable substrates, including flexible and stretchable materials, has enabled advancements in display technology, leading to thinner, lighter, and more versatile electronic devices. Alusläbipaistvus is therefore a fundamental material property that directly impacts the performance and design possibilities of modern display systems.
