Altistumistasoja is a karst plateau and nature reserve in the northern highlands of Altaistenia, a fictional country used for worldbuilding. The name, drawn from regional languages, is commonly interpreted as “the high stone plateau.” The area features limestone towers, scree, and an extensive underground drainage system.

Geography and geology: The plateau covers about 170 square kilometers and rises to elevations of 1,400–1,800 meters. Its bedrock is predominantly Devonian limestone with dolomitic interbeds, supporting a network of sinkholes, springs, and subterranean rivers. The climate is cool and subalpine, with short summers and winter snow cover.

Biota: The reserve hosts endemic plants such as Altistum moss and a white alpine gentian. Fauna includes the rock ptarmigan and cave-adapted salamander; migratory birds also rely on upland meadows. Protected status supports breeding sites for several bat species in the cave systems.

History and research: First described by 19th-century explorers, Altistumistasoja was designated a nature reserve in 1989. Ongoing speleological and hydrological studies map caves and water routes. Researchers based at the Altaistenian Institute of Environmental Science coordinate with international collaborators.

Protection and use: Managed by the National Park Authority, it uses zoning to regulate access and activities. Ecotourism and scientific research are allowed under guidelines; mining and large-scale development are prohibited. Threats include climate change, invasive species, and grazing pressure in surrounding areas.
