Altimeterinstrumenter refers to a category of instruments designed to measure altitude, which is the height of an object above a specific reference point, typically sea level. These instruments are crucial in various fields, including aviation, mountaineering, and surveying.

The most common type of altimeter is the aneroid altimeter, which operates by measuring atmospheric pressure. As altitude increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. The aneroid altimeter contains a small, flexible, sealed metal box (an aneroid cell) that expands or contracts with changes in external pressure. This expansion or contraction is mechanically linked to a needle that indicates the altitude on a calibrated dial.

Another type of altimeter is the radio altimeter, also known as a radar altimeter. This instrument uses radio waves to determine the height of an aircraft above the terrain directly below it. It emits radio pulses downwards and measures the time it takes for the reflected pulses to return. This time-of-flight measurement is then used to calculate the precise altitude above ground level.

Barometric altimeters, a subtype of aneroid altimeters, are also used in hiking and general outdoor activities. They are calibrated to a standard atmospheric pressure at sea level, but their accuracy can be affected by weather conditions. For more precise altitude readings, especially in applications requiring high accuracy, other technologies like GPS altimeters, which rely on satellite signals, are employed. GPS altimeters calculate altitude by triangulating the user's position based on signals from multiple satellites.
