The alternative hypothesis is then formulated to propose that there is indeed an effect or difference to be found.

For example, if the null hypothesis states that a new drug has no effect on blood pressure, the alternative hypothesis might state that the new drug lowers blood pressure. The goal of hypothesis testing is to gather evidence from sample data to determine whether there is enough statistical significance to reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative hypothesis. If the evidence is strong enough, the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is supported. If the evidence is not strong enough, the null hypothesis is not rejected, meaning there is insufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis. The choice between a one-tailed or two-tailed alternative hypothesis depends on whether the researcher has a specific direction of effect in mind.
