Alkyyniryhmä refers to a functional group in organic chemistry characterized by the presence of a carbon-carbon triple bond. This triple bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds, making it a region of high electron density and significant reactivity. Compounds containing this functional group are known as alkynes. The general formula for acyclic alkynes is CnH2n-2, where n is the number of carbon atoms.

The simplest alkyne is ethyne, also known as acetylene, with the formula C2H2. The carbon atoms in the triple bond are sp hybridized, resulting in a linear geometry around these atoms. This linear geometry is a defining characteristic of alkyne structures. The presence of the triple bond makes alkynes more reactive than their alkene or alkane counterparts. They readily undergo addition reactions, where the pi bonds are broken and new atoms or groups are added across the triple bond. Common addition reactions include hydrogenation, halogenation, and hydrohalogenation.

Alkynes are important intermediates in various chemical syntheses. They can be synthesized through dehydrohalogenation of dihaloalkanes or by reacting metal acetylides with alkyl halides. Due to their reactivity, alkynes find applications in the production of polymers, pharmaceuticals, and other specialty chemicals. The triple bond can also be partially reduced to a double bond (alkene) or fully reduced to a single bond (alkane), offering synthetic flexibility.
