alkyloid
Alkyloid is a term sometimes used to describe compounds that share structural similarities with alkaloids but do not strictly meet the classical definition of an alkaloid. The classical definition typically requires a compound to be basic, naturally occurring, and contain at least one nitrogen atom in a heterocyclic ring. Alkyloids, however, might deviate from one or more of these criteria. For instance, they might be synthetic rather than naturally occurring, or their nitrogen atom might be part of an open chain rather than a ring, or they might exhibit weaker basicity. The term is not as widely established or consistently defined as "alkaloid" and can sometimes be used interchangeably with related terms like "alkaloid-like" or "pseudoalkaloid" depending on the context.
The distinction between alkaloids and alkyloids is often a matter of chemical classification and historical convention.
