Alkuperäisvalmistaja, or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), refers to a company that manufactures parts and equipment that may be marketed by another company. The OEM produces the product, but it is then branded and sold by a different company, often referred to as the value-added reseller (VAR) or system integrator. This business model is common across various industries, including electronics, automotive, and software.

In the electronics sector, an OEM might produce components like microchips or displays, which are then incorporated into larger products by other companies that design and market the final devices. Similarly, in the automotive industry, OEMs manufacture essential parts such as engines or transmissions, which are then assembled into vehicles by car manufacturers under their own brand names. In software, an OEM might develop a specific feature or module that is licensed and bundled into a larger software suite by another provider.

The OEM model allows companies to specialize in manufacturing, focusing on production efficiency and quality. For the branding company, it provides access to specialized components or products without the need for extensive in-house manufacturing capabilities. This can lead to faster product development cycles and reduced costs. However, it also means the branding company has less direct control over the manufacturing process of the OEM's components. The OEM itself might also sell its products to multiple branding companies, fostering competition among those who use its components.
