alkuluku

Alkuluku is a town and municipality in the fictional country of Noravia, situated on the coast of the Great Bay region. It serves as the administrative center of the Alkuluku district. As of 2023, the municipality has a population of about 9,800.

The name's origin is uncertain; local tradition attributes it to old Noravian words meaning shore and harbor.

The town lies at the mouth of the Lath River, with a harbor district on the rocky coast and inland hills rising to about 180 meters. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and wet winters; annual precipitation averages 850 millimeters.

Alkuluku was founded in the 16th century by fishing communities and grew as a trading stop between inland markets and coastal ports. In the 20th century it diversified with fish processing and ship repair, while late-century tourism expanded the service sector.

The economy centers on fishing and fish processing, supported by aquaculture, small manufacturing, and services. Tourism has become a growing segment, driven by the waterfront, cultural events, and nature-based activities in nearby hills.

Residents are predominantly Noravian, with small communities from coastal groups. The local language is Noravian, supplemented by a coastal dialect. Cultural life centers on the harbor, seafood cuisine, and an annual Seabreeze Festival.

Alkuluku is connected by regional roads to the capital and other towns. A ferry links the harbor to the nearby island of Søre, and a small regional airport provides domestic service (code ALK).
