Alkueläimet, often translated as protozoa, represent a diverse group of eukaryotic microorganisms that were historically classified together due to their animal-like characteristics, such as motility and heterotrophic nutrition. However, modern biological classification no longer recognizes them as a single taxonomic unit. Instead, the term is now used more broadly to encompass a vast array of single-celled organisms belonging to different supergroups within the domain Eukarya.

These organisms exhibit a wide range of forms and lifestyles. Many are free-living, found in aquatic environments, soil, and even as commensals or parasites within other organisms. Their modes of movement are varied, including the use of flagella (whip-like structures), cilia (short, hair-like appendages), or pseudopodia (temporary extensions of the cytoplasm). Their feeding strategies are also diverse, involving phagocytosis (engulfing food particles), pinocytosis (absorbing dissolved nutrients), or absorption.

Reproduction in protozoa can be asexual, typically through binary fission, or sexual, involving processes like conjugation or syngamy. Many protozoa play crucial roles in ecosystems, acting as decomposers or as food sources for other organisms. Conversely, some are significant pathogens, causing diseases in humans and animals, such as malaria, amoebic dysentery, and sleeping sickness. The study of protozoa, historically known as protozoology, continues to be an important field for understanding biodiversity, evolution, and disease.
