Alkuainesteköitä, a Finnish term, translates to "elemental liquids" or "liquid elements." This concept primarily refers to substances that are in a liquid state at standard temperature and pressure and are composed of a single chemical element. In the periodic table, only two elements fit this description: bromine (Br) and mercury (Hg).

Bromine is a reddish-brown, volatile liquid known for its strong, unpleasant odor. It belongs to the halogen group and is highly reactive. Mercury, on the other hand, is a silvery-white, dense liquid metal. It is a unique element due to its liquid state at room temperature and is often used in thermometers and other scientific instruments, though its toxicity has led to a decrease in its widespread use.

While these are the only two elements that are liquid under typical conditions, other elements can become liquid at temperatures not far removed from standard conditions. For example, gallium melts just above room temperature, and cesium and rubidium melt at slightly higher but still accessible temperatures. These elements, when in their molten state, could also be considered "elemental liquids" in a broader sense, though the term "alkuainesteköitä" most strictly applies to bromine and mercury.
