Alkalosis is a condition characterized by an excessive amount of base or an insufficient amount of acid in the body's fluids. When the blood pH rises above 7.45, it is considered alkalemic.

There are two primary types of alkalosis: respiratory alkalosis and metabolic alkalosis. Respiratory alkalosis occurs when the body hyperventilates, leading to an excessive loss of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide acts as an acid in the blood, so its removal causes the pH to increase. Common causes of hyperventilation include anxiety, panic attacks, lung diseases, and high altitudes.

Metabolic alkalosis arises from an imbalance in the body's metabolic processes. This can be due to a loss of acid from the body or an increase in bicarbonate. Vomiting, excessive use of diuretics, and certain endocrine disorders can lead to metabolic alkalosis. Ingesting large amounts of alkaline substances can also contribute to this condition.

The symptoms of alkalosis can vary depending on the severity and the underlying cause. Mild cases may be asymptomatic, while more severe cases can manifest as muscle twitching, spasms, confusion, nausea, and tingling sensations. In critical situations, alkalosis can lead to seizures, coma, and even death. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure pH, carbon dioxide levels, and bicarbonate concentration. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and restoring the body's acid-base balance.
