Alkalmazásréteg refers to the top layer in a layered network model, such as the OSI model or the TCP/IP model. It is the layer that directly interacts with end-user applications. This layer is responsible for providing services to the application software that runs on a network. Think of it as the interface between the application and the network itself.

The primary function of the application layer is to enable network applications to access the services of other network layers and to define the protocols that applications use to exchange data. This includes tasks like data representation, encryption, and session management. Examples of protocols operating at the application layer include HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) for web browsing, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) for file transfer, SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) for email, and DNS (Domain Name System) for resolving domain names to IP addresses.

Essentially, the application layer abstracts the complexity of the underlying network infrastructure from the end-user application. Applications don't need to worry about how data is routed or transmitted; they simply interact with the application layer protocols, which then handle the necessary communication with lower network layers. This separation of concerns allows for the development of diverse applications without needing to understand the intricate details of network protocols.
