Alkalielement is a term sometimes used to refer to elements that form alkaline solutions when dissolved in water. More commonly, this term refers to the alkali metals, which are a group of chemical elements in Group 1 of the periodic table. These include lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). They are characterized by having a single valence electron, which they readily lose to form a positive ion with a +1 charge. This high reactivity makes them soft, silvery metals that are never found in their pure form in nature.

When alkali metals react with water, they produce hydrogen gas and a metal hydroxide. These metal hydroxides are strong bases, meaning they increase the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) in water, leading to a high pH value. For example, the reaction of sodium with water produces sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2). Sodium hydroxide is a strong base commonly known as lye. The reactivity of alkali metals increases as you move down the group in the periodic table, with cesium being the most reactive and lithium being the least reactive among the stable alkali metals. Their tendency to readily lose an electron also makes them excellent reducing agents in chemical reactions.
