Alkaessa is a fictional city-state and archipelago used in speculative fiction and worldbuilding exercises. In most renderings it lies at the edge of a broad strait between two seas, comprising twelve main islands and a network of islets and shoals. The archipelago is favored in settings for its varied coastlines, terraced hills, and well-protected harbors that connect it to distant trade routes.

Etymology and language: The name derives from the constructed Alkaessian language, with alka- meaning bright and -essa as a place suffix. The local speech is known as Alkaessan, with a maritime dialect called Seaportian.

History and governance: According to common worldbuilding lore, Alkaessa was settled by seafarers in the early Middle Ages and grew into a mercantile republic. Political power is traditionally held by a Council of Twelve Guilds, with decisions ratified in annual assemblies and leadership rotated by lottery among guild members.
