Algóritmum is the Latinization of the name of the 9th-century Persian mathematician Muḥammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. His work, particularly his treatise on calculation with Hindu-Arabic numerals, was translated into Latin in the 12th century. This translation was instrumental in introducing the decimal number system to Europe.

The term "algorismus" or "algorism" originally referred to the system of arithmetic using these numerals. Over time, the meaning evolved. By the 17th century, the word began to be associated with a set of rules or procedures for solving mathematical problems. This semantic shift culminated in the modern understanding of an algorithm as a finite sequence of well-defined, computer-implementable instructions, typically to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation.
