Alga virágzás, often translated as algal bloom, refers to the rapid increase in the population of algae in aquatic ecosystems. This phenomenon can occur in both freshwater and marine environments and is characterized by a visible change in water color, often appearing as a green, blue-green, or reddish-brown scum on the surface.

Algal blooms are primarily driven by nutrient enrichment, a process known as eutrophication. Excess nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, enter waterways through agricultural runoff, wastewater discharge, and industrial pollution. When these nutrients are readily available, algae, which are microscopic photosynthetic organisms, can reproduce at an accelerated rate.

While some algal blooms are harmless and a natural part of aquatic life cycles, others can be detrimental. Certain types of algae produce toxins that can harm fish, shellfish, and even humans who consume contaminated seafood or come into contact with the water. These toxic blooms are referred to as harmful algal blooms (HABs). HABs can lead to fish kills, disrupt ecosystems, and impact economies dependent on tourism and fishing.

The ecological consequences of algal blooms include oxygen depletion. As algae die and decompose, bacteria consume large amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions that can suffocate aquatic life. Blooms can also block sunlight, hindering the growth of submerged aquatic vegetation.

Mitigation strategies focus on reducing nutrient pollution through improved wastewater treatment, responsible agricultural practices, and controlling urban runoff. Monitoring and early warning systems are also crucial for managing the risks associated with harmful algal blooms.
